Hello! I've heard about that on Engadget, but they have not described how the whole systems works. I'd like to know how is possible to use GPS navigation, where GPS signals are unavailable? And is it possible to block that system for good?

Many thanks in advance!

Hello, Rick!

There is nothing to worry about, that system because it is not that new. We will try to explain how does it work and how one can protect himself from tracking with that indoor navigation system. First of all we should mention that it uses GPS for navigation where it is available and when the GPS signals are blocked it simply remembers the latest coordinates and then that new indoor navigation system starts working.

That GPS-less navigation chip updates your last known coordinates by calculating the data from accelerometers, gyroscopes and built-in compasses. So the system detects where and with what speed you are heading and updates your location accordingly. It is fully autonomous, it only need initial coordinates obtained from GPS and then it uses only its own data. So if you use a GPS signal blocker it will not work, because it will not be able to get those initial coordinates.

The prototype of that new navigation chip is already built and it can be installed in smartphones in a couple of years. It can be really useful for hospitals and firefighters as well as for warrantless tracking, due to its low energy consumption and high autonomy. We should also mention that you can avoid tracking with that new system by simply staying indoors for some time, because the system suffers from errors, if stays without GPS corrections for a long time. Also you can get under the coverage of various GPS jamming devices to reach the same results.

Thanks for your question, I hope I've managed to help!
