Hello, I use trains rather often and now my favourite Amtrak trains have told the papers that they are to equip all their trains with a free public Wi-Fi till the late summer. I'm not an expert in PC's and all those gadgets, I just would like to know whether it is safe to use those public hotspots, I need my personal data safe.

Hello, Jim!

Well, we should tell you that public Wi-Fi hotspots are dangerous, we've written lots on it on our personal security blog and we will explain you why. First of all, all the data you exchange with the hotspot is sent via radio signals on 2,4 GHz frequency. As you know, you can not limit the spreading of those signals, without a Wi-Fi signal blocker or a Faraday Cage. As long as the sreading of the signal is not limited, anyone in Wi-Fi working range will be able to intercept your traffic and acquire some sensitive information.

Second, Wi-Fi is vulnerable to hacks. So, a hacker would be able to hack the network and with using Wi-Fi exploits, such as weak encryption protocols, or open SSID broadcasting. It takes time, for example, if the hotspot uses WEP encryption, it will take at least 10 minutes to hack that network, and if it is WPA2 – hacker will have the chance to crack it only when someone connects the network.

So, we at jammer-store.com may tell you that it is not dangerous to use those public Wi-Fi hotspots, if you do not plan to read your mail, or access your bank account. Otherwise, you may loose some sensitive data. We would also recommend you to read our safe mobile banking post, if you are using mobile access to your bank account, those rules will definitely help.

Thank you for your question, I hope, I've managed to help!
