Hi guys! Recently I watched a video on Youtube where that amazing jumping robot made by Boston Dynamics was featured. At first I thought "Wow! That's a cool thing!" but then I've started to think about it is possibly dangerous usage. Can I have some protection against it, just in case?

Hello Tamara!

You know, the Boston Dynamics SandFlea is a very cool surveillance robot indeed. I was impressed so much after watching the video you have mentioned that barely had words to describe my excitement! But then your words about its possible misuse reminded me that it is not all that simple, so I have started to think about it and to analyze the possible issues.

Boston Dynamics SandFlea is a remotely controlled surveillance robot that can work for two hours and can jump up to 25 times without being recharged. Its jumping mechanism uses disposable fuel cartridges in order to function properly. It also has on-board camera that can stream real-time video to the OCU (Operator Control Unit) and take pictures. In addition it has the illumination, both visible and infrared for night operations.

The OCU of the Boston Dynamics SandFlea is the case with all necessary control tools and display for the live video from its camera. Together with the robot itself they can fit into small backpack. The jump height of SandFlea is up to 30 ft thus it can pass many obstacles and jump into the windows with nice precision. Consider that except the danger of being spied in such way there is also even bigger danger - the IED can be fit to the SandFlea that will jump into your house and detonate.

The OCU can use many various frequency bands for its work, thus in order to protect yourself and your family from possible threat you can block Boston Dynamics SandFlea OCU signal, leaving this surveillance robot without human control, still and helpless.
