Hello everybody! UK drivers will soon probably start to install special black boxes in their cars. I have read that those black boxes will monitor their driving behavior and will also use GPS tracking to record all movement of the vehicle. This will grant them some insurance privileges. Will US implement the same practice?

Hi Spenser!

Indeed, UK drivers will soon have the enticing opportunity to install the special black box as part of the new insurance policy of their Automobile Association. This black box will monitor many different things like speed, braking and other driving behaviors of the driver in his or her car. Among other things there will be also GPS tracker inside of this black box that will monitor the roads which are driven by the car.

The installation of this black box will be made optionally, allowing the drivers who agree to do that to save around $1343 per year. Nice reason to think about it, how do you think? Especially if you are the young driver. The downside of this practice is the real privacy concern because your car will almost literally watch your every step. Not every person will like that.

As for US, the Supreme Court made a decision that GPS tracking without a warrant is now absolutely illegal. So adopting this policy in the US might also rise a lot of privacy concerns, especially if consider the possibility that police might use the data gained from the black box against the driver later. Yet there will definitely be such people who can give some privacy away for the opportunity to get some cash instead.

Still if you are not one of them and willing to keep your privacy by all means, you can prevent black box from tracking your location via GPS tracker and save the secret of the roads you were traveling.
